Nintendo Switch Sells 10M Units in Nine Months

Nintendo Switch Sells 10M Units in Nine Months

The Switch – Nintendo’s home-handheld hybrid console – has sold over 10 million units. The milestone is impressive, given the system launched just nine months ago in March. With the holiday season on the horizon, it’s likely we’ll see that number grow further.

For comparison, the company’s previous system the Wii U sold 13.56 million units over five years. That number is still dwarfed by Nintendo’s motion-controlled Wii, which sold over 100 million units over its lifespan.

Much of the Switch’s success is probably due to its solid first-party line-up. The system launched with the critically acclaimed Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This was soon followed by multiplayer shooter Splatoon 2, and the delightful Super Mario Odyssey.

As Eurogamer points out, 2018 looks to be another solid year for Nintendo; new Kirby and Yoshi titles will be arriving, alongside Bayonetta 2.

It’s certainly suited to our busier and faster paced lifestyles. It’s nice to be able to continue your progress in the game even if you’re not in front of your TV. It’s like mobile gaming except with much higher production values

Definitely lots of Negativity when it launched glad it’s doing well. I’m sure Sony and Microsoft will definitely input more mobility into their next gen and follow suit. Maybe a successor to the vita is now on the cards?

I'd be interested in seeing the comparison between the sales of the switch, ps4 and xbox for this year.
So looking at the figures In January they announced 53.4m, June 60.4m and December 70.6m. So somewhere between 10 and 17 million in the timeframe that Switch took to get 10m. Forbes has noted that the Switch and PS4 are neck and neck with regards to how long it took to get to the 10m mark.

Note that the PS4 console has been on a massive sale in comparison to the full price of the Switch.

Agree, great news. The reports i’ve read say it’s neck and neck with the PS4 although not sure how that ties with release dates - the PS4 was a November release and Switch March. Either way the fact it’s selling means that the games will keep coming!

I know for a while that in New Zealand the switch was outselling the Xbox at the beginning of the year, but I'm not sure how that compares now that the Xbox has dropped in price and the x has come out

Honestly don't think there's too much surprise there looks like a solid unit and will be getting one as soon as the boss lady permits it.

Innovation rewarded, and that is great to see.

However, with 10million units around the place I don't see many 4-player games of anything gathered in public areas like the reveal ads promised.
