Last month it was announced publisher Square Enix would sell the Hitman developer, and the studio's future has since been uncertain. However IO Interactive recently announced they will continue on as an independent studio, IGN reported.
The announcement was made on IO's official website:
"I am proud to announce today that IOI is now officially an independent studio. We have successfully concluded our negotiations with Square Enix and have agreed to a management buyout. Crucially, we will keep all of the rights to the Hitman IP."
Square Enix were initially looking to continue the Hitman series without IO Interactive, however it looks the developer has maintained the reins to Agent 47.
IO also teased that more news on Hitman is coming soon:
"We are counting on the continued support of all our players; simply by having fun with everything we’ve released so far for HITMAN – and we want to encourage more of you to try our game. We have more details to come on our plans for that next week."
IO Interactive are also known for, albeit less so, Kane and Lynch, Freedom Fighters, and Mini Ninjas.
